Why Library ?

Libraries are the primary source of knowledge and help develop one of the most important habits in children and youth - the habit of reading. The importance of libraries, especially in schools, cannot be stressed enough. There is roughly one rural library in the country for 11500 people and one urban library for 80000 people. Most of these libraries too have not been upgraded. According to the 2011 census, the per capita expenditure on the development of public libraries translates to 7 paise.

With more and more public libraries closing down and books becoming more expensive and inaccessible, children from unprivileged and marginalised communities find it harder to read. In such a scenario, community libraries have growing relevance. Community libraries, upgraded to include all recent advancements in the field of education, can act as a catalyst in empowerment of people from underprivileged communities.

Documenting Library Narratives

Haadibadi Community Library is looking forward to documenting your experience of having access - or the lack of it - to libraries. Please take these few minutes in helping us understand, document and collect the details of library in our lives. We will be using your responses to create a map of library experiences and sharing it as an open resource in different forms.

For the children from underprivileged communities, libraries are safe spaces for access to books, learning and fun. With this idea, we have established the Haadibadi Community Library. We primarily aim to uplift the underprivileged sections of the society by opening up the world of books for free.

Currently, the Haadibadi Community Library is located in Roopena Agrahara, Bangalore. This place has Diaspora from states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and North Karnataka, and other North Indian states with most people working in the garment industries and construction sites.

We intend to engage the children as well as the youth of the community in reading and building perspectives, having discussions and using the power of knowledge to break out of the constriction they currently live in. With a plethora of other activities that we carry out, we wish to build a society in which reading is a right, and not a privilege.

We have not limited ourselves only to the Community Library, but also have reached out to schools in the neighbourhood. We have been devising different ways and means to make available books and other resources to children in their schools as well.

The goal is not just to provide books, but also develop awareness and capability in the students and teachers to independently and successfully operate a library. We are putting in all possible efforts to reach out to as many people and communities as possible and help them realise, develop and work to their fullest potential.
